Blue Lagoon and Golden Circle

The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa in southwestern Iceland. Its bathing water is rich in minerals and algae. The milky blue water, a byproduct from the nearby geothermal power plant Svartsengi, is the result of its high silica content. It initially reaches the surface at a temperature of 240 °C but by the time it reaches the spa it is around 38 °C.

The Golden Circle is a popular tourist route that loops from Reykjavík into the southern uplands of Iceland and takes in places such as Þingvellir and Gullfoss Waterfall. It includes the Haukadalur geothermal area (home to geysers Strokkur and Geysir) and the Kerið volcanic crater. Þingvellir, now a national park, was the original site of the Icelandic parliament (930AD-1798AD) and lies in a rift valley that marks the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.
